CLOCKS GO FORWARD – The Future of Abortion Rights – WSJ 3/9 – 3/10, 2024
Daylights Savings Weekend,

15.25 x 15.25 x 2.25 inches. Newspaper, birth control insert, broccoli tag, lazy susan & clear acrylic medium on wood panel.
In Spring of 2024 I was working on my largest collage yet, addressing the reality of women’s rights and the consequences after a year of the repeal of ROE V WADE. I had just finished ” paving a road” with the text of abortion bans rolling out on a state by state basis. The reality was too much. I decided I needed to step outside the studio.
In March I challenged myself to create a collage to submit and show in a month. This particular show would accept at least one work and it had to be a circle. At the time I was experiencing a lifetime of migraines and the joys of menopause so any extra estrogen was now not an option. I stopped using the pill.
Restricted to a circle, I was reminded of an old family bit called the “Wheel of Punishment” and reminisced the beeps of the giant Price is Right Wheel. An idea coalesced with the 28 day menstrual cycle and the tasty slice of torture served daily from a perpetual hormonal shift. Expanding from my personal experience, this is a shared story of different details and timelines of all women.
What if I am, I am not, I can not, or I don’t want to be, pregnant?
Concerned with the state of abortion and the upcoming election, I was primed to find my message in the news. It is a thrill to find words, phrases, fragments that provoke new insights and related themes. Rearranging headlines becomes reflection and discourse. If I can’t find the words, I can find the letters. The paper I had on hand happened to be the weekend of Daylight Savings Time. On the front page in bold in the lower left corner. “This weekend CLOCKS GO FORWARD.” Finishing the work with the birth control prescription insert I was reminded of the medical risks women take to prevent an unwanted pregnancy I am relieved this chapter is closing.
To be able to spin the wheel was always the plan. A little playfulness lightens the mood, and if we are not laughing, we are definitely crying. I am grateful to the helper at our local hardware store and a torrential downpour that helped me to complete and deliver this on time.
