One moment. One issue. One newspaper.
An exotic still-life fruit provides the foundation and undercurrent for the final act of a lame-duck president. 13 Insurrectionists, pulled from January 7th’s front page continue a dedicated scramble in blind faith amidst a meticulous field of incessant opinion, contradiction, and greed. Democracy shifts beneath our feet, faults sway a solid ground taken for granted. Words spoken, posted, and reported direct an outsized power in the wake of a divided election and a sea of relentless political agenda.
In Bananas For Scale, Hartigan Goldstein looked on, baffled with the rest of the country, as January 6, 2021, unfolded in the news. Every parental lesson she had ever tried to impart to her children, was blatantly disregarded by the politician in our highest office. Combining recently painted studies of a nontraditional still-life fruit with the next morning’s newspaper, Kelly funneled her frustration into an obsessive search for tonal value and productive discourse amongst even the smallest text of black and white.
Laguna Beach artist, Kelly HartiganGoldstein, works in rumination and the daily headlines merging the lens of individual experience with social discourse in contemplative collage. Using only a newspaper from a single date, a detailed written image emerges composed exclusively of cut paper and the weight of the reported word.
