Bananas for Scale – Jan. 6th – WSJ 1/7/2021
10 x 10 x 1.5 inches – Wall Street Journal Newspaper, clear acrylic medium on cradled wood panel.

One issue. One moment. One newspaper.

As Jan 6, 2021, unfolded in the news, Kelly Hartigan Goldstein was baffled to witness our highest-ranking politician disregard every parental lesson she ever tried to impart.  Retrieving a newspaper early Jan 7th, she found solace in an obsessive word find, combining studies of her favorite still-life fruit with the chaos of a fragile Democracy. 16 layers of archival UV ink replicates the original cut paper texture in Kelly’s first limited edition collage reproduction.

Laguna Beach artist, Kelly Hartigan Goldstein, ruminates current events in meticulous hand-cut newspaper collage.  Merging an individual experience with a larger debate, she paints discourse with the available language, typography, and tonal values. Using only cut newspaper from a single date, a written image emerges from the weight of the day’s reported word. Found writing seeks to make sense of a relentless and polarizing news cycle, continually shouting in the background of our day.
